  • Cake of the week – chocolate eclairs!
  • Interesting Fact – 5 of the Welsh 14/15 peaks over 3000ft are found in the Glyderau mountains
  • Best Thing – I bought a road bike!
  • Work Highlight – 2-day MBLA course – Trail Cycle Leader Training
  • Best Outdoor – Scramblathon in the Glyders – 4 top grade routes

Summary: Dry land this week, 2 legs (running/scrambling) or 2 wheels (mtb)…

The Chasm Face Route (*** 3) on Glyder Fach

Monday – today saw Will (CA) and I take on some of the top-rated scrambles in the Glyderau. A natural progression from Cwm Idwal up the Idwal Staircase (** 2) led us suitably to the base of Cneifion Arête (*** 3). Topping out on Y Gribin’s ‘football pitch’ we quickly contoured around the back of Cwm Bochlwyd, without sacrificing much height, in order to gain the start of Dolmen Ridge (*** 3). A quick scamper up to the top of Glyder Fach before diving down Bristly screes to cut accross to the start of The Chasm Face (*** 3) for some ‘ape like swings’ and mini caving expedition into ‘the bowels of the mountain’.

In the evening, I got the chance to catch up properly with Tom & Joe from Nottingham High School who were on a Mountain Leader Training course; both great lads who I hope will be back soon enough to do their assessment.

Tuesday – Wash day! Fixed my bike, bought (ahem) a road bike, and worked a night shift

Wednesday – Tuesday’s fixes left only for a bike wash ahead of the following days’ MTBing course. In the afternoon I escaped to Bangor to catch up with some old friends including a round trip via Bangor Students’ Union to see some old colleagues!

Swatting up with some MBLA handbook revision saw out the evening

Bangor Pier - sunny!

Thursday – PYB Course – MBLA (Mountain Bike Leaders Award) TCLT (Trail Cycle Leader Training) day 1 – theory & practical skills (getting that track stand still)

In the evening Mum & Dad popped by on their way home from Ireland to see the Brenin (luckily in the finest sunshine). After dinner, I couldn’t miss out on a sunny evening’s solo Moel Siabod run.

Friday – PYB Course – TCLT day 2 – a ride out into the Gwydyr Forest to learn all things group management and navigation; it’s great to experience some transferable skills applying quite seamlessly across NGB qualifications in different disciplines.

Evening: course over – a glass of red and a double episode of Silent Witness

Saturday – Reception shift with a lunch shift in front of the Bar TV watching Le Tour. I managed to squeeze an hour and a half’s Bike Ride in before evening meal over to Dolwyddelan and back via Betws (through the forest) – interesting nav 🙂

Sunday – Stores shift, largely chatting to Andy re. computing stuff + I managed to be ultra productive in my breaks with photo editing and planning ahead in the calendar. It rained solidly all day and all the way home to Nottingham – visiting the folks. Top gift from their Ireland trip – a selection of whiskey!
