Week 4 at Plas y Brenin

Cake of the week – Giant Profiterole | Interesting Fact – As you grow older, time passes quicker! Why?… if you’re 5, a year is 1/5 of your life – a large proportion, however, if you’re 40, a year is 1/40 of your life thus a smaller proportion | Best PYB – Afon Ddu Gorge Scramble  | Work Highlight – Ski Stores | Best Outdoor – Mountain Bike Orienteering in Beddgelert Forest

Monda– today I joined in with a school group on their gorge scrambling day – I’d never been up the Afon Ddu (I wasn’t sure until the day!) and so it turned out to be a fun day out observing how the instructors manage groups up the gorge. Wet!

Tuesday – a shadowing day – I’d asked Dave Rudkin if I could observe the structure of an ML Emergency Ropework Training day, this was of great help to me as, even though I hold my ML, I am keen to pick up instructional methods/tips on various aspects of the syllabus.

Wednesday – a quiet morning but a post-lunch session in the climbing wall playing on the leading wall was a sound warm-up for an afternoon mountain biking Penmachno Loop 1 with Brendan.

In the evening – a BBQ/party in Penmachno – CAs/instructors/staff/friends!

Thursday – Chill-out day, saving myself for a ride to Beddgelert Forest and back for some Mountain Bike Orienteering. The 36 mile round trip involving 1070m ascent and descent was quite tiring, and the MTB-O went well – I got all the controls in less than 45 minutes (score event) so can’t have done too badly – still awaiting results!

Friday – Maintenance shift – helped over in Bryn Engan Bunkhouse with Josh & Dave, then helped the housekeeping crew in the afternoon. Not that I remember but according to Facebook in the evening; “currently chilling in the Plas y Brenin bar listening to Friday night on Radio 1 – tunes! not forgetting the whisky of course. Blogosphere catch-up time”

Saturday – Stores shift – reasonably fun as I helped Claire with the Ski Stores – servicing (and out-of-servicing!) skis. Late afternoon I drove down to Bethesda to attend a housewarming BBQ chez Gareth & Rachel (Bangor Uni) and have a cuppa chez Ben & Naomi (Cotswold Outdoor)

Later on, there was no social so instead I ran up Moel Siabod for some fell-running training; Llyn Mymbyr bridge to summit Trig Point took 33.5 minutes – it feels likely that, with a little more fitness and especially on a race day, this time should dip below 30 quickly enough. 16 minutes down was reasonable as I wasn’t/can’t push this at the moment without putting the knee in jeopardy again! Will go at around 12 minutes in a race I think.

Sunday – Kitchen Shift followed by a chilled afternoon then an evening climbing Dinas Mot – Direct Route (VS 5b) with Will, Iona, & Kristina. A lovely evening with glorious sunlight down the valley!
