Scrambling Photos: Idwal Staircase, Cneifion Arête, Chasm Face – Part 2/2

Part 2/2 (for digestibility the photos have been split into 2 parts – see Part 1 here)

The finest scrambling in Snowdonia to date!

A positively tropical day out, our route took us on a warm up – Idwal Staircase** (2) – to gain lower Cwm Cneifion for the ever-Alpine like Cneifion Arête** (3), before diving into and around the back of Cwm Bochlwyd to gain The Chasm Face*** (3)

…summiting Glyder Fach, and playing extensively on Castell y Gwynt (almost worthy of scramble #4 of the day), we headed on shortcutting Glyder Fawr and taking an alternative scree descent to Llyn y Cwn. Thereafter a quick visit to Y Garn and down the NE ridge in the evening sunlight made for a pleasant descent directly back to the car at Ogwen Cottage

Negotiating the 'series of ape-like swings' section of The Chasm Face

'...then make a series of diagonal ape-like swings on flakes and spikes...'*

The exposed 'catwalk' section on The Chasm Face

'From the notch, creep up a half-metre wide cat-walk - exposed but not difficult - to enter the upper chasm...'*

Disappearing into 'The Bowels' of Glyder Fach

'...(claustrophobic, overweight or overclad scramblers use this arch - the Arch tempter - to escape rightward into Main Gully. Above the arch, the dreaded Vertical Vice - crux of The Chasm Rock climb - threatens all sorts of unspeakable torture, so avoid this insecure chimney/crack by wriggling up the first part of the chimney then squirming through a narrow cleft to enter the bowels of the mountain...'*

The 'Subterranean exit' route, The Chasm Face

'...then squirming through a narrow cleft to enter the bowels of the mountain...'*
